Lee Wagstaff
Lee Wagstaff is an English artist, living and working in Berlin. He studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, the Royal College of Art in London and Kyoto
City University of Arts in Japan.
Mostly working in oils Wagstaff intertwines patterns and optical illusions to craft mysterious portraits imbued with elements of surrealism, pop art and Opart.
´With these paintings what is interesting for me is to see how much of the original face can be removed, altered or disguised whilst still maintaining the essence of a person. A recurring theme in my work is pattern, I am drawn to patterns as way to connect to and to participate in an ever evolving visual culture. When I make art I think about whether it is still possible to make images that embody ideas of beauty, faith and truth`.
Examples of Wagstaff’s art are held at the Victoria & Albert Museum London and in the prestigious collections of Raff Simons, David Bowie and Ömer Koç.
